The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a file format for describing interactive 3D objects and worlds. It is based upon the OpenInventor file format which was originally developed by Silicon Graphics, Inc.
There are three primary flavors of VRML: VRML 1, VRML 2 and VRML 97. The latter two are almost identical, with VRML 97 being the ISO/IEC standardized version.
A number of on-line specifications for the various versions of VRML are maintained by the Web3D Consortium:
The VRML file format has been superceded by the X3D File Format.
